The Four Reading Realms
A reading framework for middle and high school ELA
A NEW reading framework for middle and high school ELA
Reframing Resistance: transform resistance into resilience. Created by Amanda Cardenas of Mud & Ink Teaching, the Four Reading Realms helps grades 6–12 teachers move from reading enforcer to reading coach, by giving students the right mindset for the right kind of reading.
OUR STUDENTS ARE RESISTING READING.
The reading crisis is real. Short-form video, AI, and frictionless media have trained students to bail the moment reading gets hard. But blaming phones doesn't help a teacher on Monday morning.
Here's what we can change: we treat "reading" as one single task. We hand students one set of gear and ask them to climb Mt. Everest and swim the English Channel with it.
A choice novel, a whole-class classic, a research article, and a political speech all get the same instructions: read every word, then answer questions.
No wonder students resist. They've never been told, honestly and specifically, why this reading matters today, or how this kind of reading is supposed to feel. The Four Reading Realms gives them the right mindset for the right task.
The four realms at a glance
Diagnose before you read
The heart of the Four Reading Realms is one simple habit: students recognize what kind of text they're holding, then load the matching mindset.
A choice novel they can abandon.
A whole-class novel they push through together.
A research article they skim strategically.
A speech they question.
When students know which realm they're in, teachers can stop being reading enforcers who demand every page, and start being reading coaches who prepare students for the task in front of them.
What the Four Reading Realms is not:
Not a new curriculum or initiative. It's a mindset framework that works with the texts you already teach.
Not "just make reading fun." Our Realm and Why Realm are deliberately challenging.
Not a phonics or decoding program.
Not a silver bullet for phones or funding. It focuses on what's within a teacher's reach, inside the classroom, for the students in the seats.
BECAUSE PANIC AND BLAME AREN’T GOING TO SOLVE THE READING CRISIS.
We need research-based, teacher-tested, real-time strategies that are going to work for the students we have in our classrooms right now. That’s what this webinar is all about.
NEXT STEPS
FOR TEACHERS:
➡️ Start with the free training
In a free 60-minute training, I walk through all four realms, why each one matters for today's students, and how to introduce them in your classroom. You'll also get the Framework Cheat Sheet, a classroom poster, and a reflection exit ticket.
FOR SCHOOLS:
➡️ Bring the realms to your whole team
Reframing Resistance: The Four Reading Realms is available as a keynote or half-day workshop for grades 6–12 teachers, in person or virtually. It gives your staff a shared language for why students resist reading, and practical ways to turn resistance into resilience.
The realms also connect to my other two workshops. Our Realm is where inquiry lives, and Classics, Reimagined: Inquiry-Based Unit Design helps departments build essential question units for the novels they already teach. Why Realm comes to life in Uncharted: The Inquiry Unit Makeover, through a rhetorical analysis unit.

Your Questions, Answered
-
The Four Reading Realms is a reading framework for grades 6–12 that reframes reading as four distinct kinds of reading: My Realm, Our Realm, Real Realm, and Why Realm. Each realm has its own purpose and mindset, and builds a specific life skill: reading identity, intellectual perseverance, strategic efficiency, and critical discernment.

It helps resistant readers by giving them an honest answer to "why are we reading this?" and the right mindset for each kind of text. Students learn that it's okay to abandon a choice book, that struggling through a hard shared novel is the point, and that skimming a research article isn't cheating.
